The word essence is defined as “identifying nature: the quality or nature of something that identifies it or makes it what it is.” This week I found myself meditating on the essence of each of the TED* (*The Empowerment Dynamic) ™ roles of Creator, Challenger and Coach.
The essence of Creator is choosing. As Creators, we choose the outcomes that we envision bringing to fruition. We also hone our capacity to choose our response to life experiences and conditions.
The essence of Challenger is learning. When a person, condition or circumstance emerges in our life to challenge us – consciously or unconsciously – we respond by discerning what learning, growth or development can result. When we act as a Challenger for others, we do so from a learning intent.
The essence of Coach is supporting. When we seek support, we reach out to others by asking to be coached. When acting as a Coach for others, we treat them as a Creator in their own right and see them as being ultimately capable and resourceful. We use the art of inquiry to support them in determining outcomes, assessing their current reality and/or identifying and committing to the baby step actions that further their creating.
The “identifying nature” of relationships rooted in TED is that of choosing, learning and supporting.
